What the evidence supports

A peer-reviewed review reports that natural sign languages are acquired on the same time scale as spoken languages when children have access to fluent signers from birth. It also describes the risk of language deprivation when accessible input is absent.2

The National Association of the Deaf’s position is that every Deaf, DeafBlind, DeafDisabled, and hard-of-hearing child should have access to a full language from birth and age-appropriate language milestones.1

What AI cannot responsibly promise

A recognition system can translate or propose text. It cannot provide the complete social, cultural, relational, and developmental environment through which a child acquires language.
