Why should written English be the admission ticket to AI?

What we learned: The access problem begins before the model answers: an ASL-first learner must first convert a signed question into the interface’s preferred language.
What we chose: Make signed expression the entrance and preserve the learner’s authority over what crosses into AI.
What exists now: A working camera → candidate → confirmation → model route now exists.

Access

Begin where the learner thinks.

The long-term experience should feel as direct as typing into an AI, with assurance running quietly and intervention appearing only when meaning is at risk.

Authority

Do not hide uncertainty behind fluent output.

The system should reveal uncertainty in a way the learner can act on and should never silently convert recognition into an authoritative question.

Evidence

Build openly enough to know what remains.

Technical infrastructure, governance controls, and controlled demos can be verified internally. Deaf-led usability and learner outcomes require external evidence and are stated as such.

From visible product to natural access

The interface disappears. The mission stays.
